Analysis of previous documentaries

After watching examples of previous A2 work, its come to my attention what could have been improved in their work and what techniques/ conventions enhanced there work (effectively the do's and don'ts). This exercise has effectively helped me understand how I can achieve my target grade and guide me to prevent making similar mistakes.

In the examples I have viewed, it appears that several key sections of the mark scheme has been ignored and not included in their work. Firstly, I will ensure that I hold shots steady, unless varied for effect. In three of the four documentaries they failed to do so, their documentaries consequently appeared unprofessional. Shot transitions also lacked thought; the one example used unnecessary transitions whilst another used only one. I will include an assortment of shot transactions for example a fade, I will attempt to escape using the same transition.  Appropriate material for task and variety of shot distances were two other aspects that were perhaps dismissed as important. In my final task I will also have to accommodate frame shots appropriately, by taking advantage of doors and tunnels etc.; two examples I watch had no frame shots. In relation to camera movements, I have concluded that if not executed 'well', don't use them at all. This is because one of the example used a panning shot to great effect, however another made their final product look unprofessional. The diegetic sounds (voiceovers and general conversation) in the examples I watched was of a poor quality. I will be conscience when planning and filming alike. . ‘Editing appropriately for the task set’ and ‘editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer’ are two essential sections of the mark scheme; I will therefore have to take great care when editing.
