Costumes, props and other technical requirements

Casting/using experts

We decided we would use three interviews i.e. with a policeman, a shop assistant and a convicted rioter; these interview will provide the audience with a  detailed account from different prospectives. We will cast individuals between the ages of 15-25 to create a rapport with our target audience. Using individuals directly effected by the London Riots will increase the validity of our documentary. We have written to a number of potential interviewees and as of the 13th of December 2013 we have received two responses; one from Jake Hogan, a Manger at Currys PC World (Chiswell Street) and the second from Danny Young a convicted rioter. We are now awaiting a response from a Policeman. This is because people who were directly involved would be able to give first hand accounts, reflecting emotions and feelings, which will capture the audience as they will be more inclined to listen to people who experienced the force of the riots in person.

UPDATE: We have arranged an interview with Sargent David Howe (18th of January 2014)

Locations research

I wanted to avoid using only the well know London land marks and therefore I explored more offbeat, hidden and less obvious locations; this will ultimately allow me to produce an to unbiased report. We researched into the areas that where most affected by the London riots and created a group that we would look at in detail. Thought this we decided to focus on three specific locations, giving us an in detail look at what the effects where and the changes that have now happened. We decided to do three locations close to us so that we could see how it changed places that we knew well. We decided to look at Peckham road and old kent road as a direct reference as to the origins of why the riots happened, we then moved onto look at oxford circus to see how the riots affected well known tourist locations of which normally would not be accosiated with crime. This gave us a diverse look on the riots creating varied footage and possible analysis. 1)Oxford Street 2)Peckham road 3)Old kent road 4) A3211
To successfully demonstrate how and why the London Riots impacted different groups of individuals i.e. the Police force, shop owners/employes and the rioters, we will need to use camera angles and movements to convey their emotions. We will need to

Archive Footage research

Regarding research into our archive footage, we scowered the web for the perfect footage; watching numerous videos that meet our requirements. Above is a shortlist of fifteen clips that we may possibly use, this will help us to determine our final cut as to which clip we will use and will fit in with our mode (expository) the best. UPDATE: 03/01/14- Recent developments to our storyboards means we have now selected the clips we will use. The footage we have selected will help to support our three interviews (with a police man, shop owner/assistant and a convicted rioter; furthermore the footage will replicate/mirror the voiceover.

Area of concern/ Inital Ideas

As a team, we brainstormed an assortment of concepts we could use and broke them down into either feasible or unfeasible. We then stared to narrow down the 'initial ideas' list, we were left with seven; namely: 1) Behind the science with the police 2) Educating Heathside 3) Can you control love? 4) London Riots 5) Racism in sport 6) Drugs in Sports 7) London 2012 Olympics Games. After consulting with our target audience we deiced on the ‘London Riots’.  Ed, our target audience and most importantly, myself felt that the London Riots topic provided us a wide range of scope. Through media language we can help to elaborate our topic and produce a product that our target audience will find informative yet entertaining (their preference). After finalizing our area of concern, we subsequently explored into the appropriate sub topics and subsequently discussed how we would go about interpreting them into our documentary. The final seven sub-topics we agreed on are as follows: 1) London Riots in the eyes of the police 2) The role of social media 3) What lead to the riots 4)Lasting legacy of the riots 5) How the youth of London feel London 6) The communities knock on effect 7)What was done to resolve the dispute? Accepting that we wouldn’t be able in integrate all seven ideas into our product we restricted the down the list to three: London Riots in the eyes of the police, The communities knock on effect and … To integrate a subdivision whereby the audience would know how the police dealt with rioters, we decided that we would use both archive footage and an interview with a policeman. We later composed a letter addressed to Police Commander and Captain, Mr. David Howe requesting an interview. To capture what affect the London Riots had on the local community we decided on using another interview with an individual directly affected by the riots (such as a store owner).
